Lib Dem support continues to nosedive

Lib Dem support continues to nosedive

Public support for the Liberal Democrats has hit its lowest level under Nick Clegg’s leadership, a new poll suggests.

Research for the Sun newspaper by YouGov put the Lib Dems on just 14%, its lowest level since February 2009.

The data is bound to spark alarm among Lib Dems concerned by the impact being in a formal coalition with the Conservatives is having on their popularity.

It is clear the Tories are not suffering from being in government. David Cameron’s party saw its support increase by one point to 43% on YouGov’s poll for a week ago. Labour remained unchanged on 35%.

During the last seven days the Lib Dems have slipped only one point, continuing a steady decline from the first post-election poll which put them on 21%.

The general election campaign, which saw Britain’s third party reach 34% at one stage, did not translate into success on polling day and the number of Lib Dem seats actually fell.
