Lib Dem poll misery continues

There are no signs of movement in the latest post-election polls, which have seen the Liberal Democrats subside to around 20 points behind their mainstream rivals.
Polls by YouGov for the Sun and by ComRes for the Independent put the Lib Dems on 15% and 16% respectively – significantly lower than the 23% share of the vote the party won in the general election on May 6th.
The last four months has seen huge disappointment for Britain’s third party in the polls. During the general election campaign the Lib Dems took themselves into second place, but could not translate the popularity surge caused by leader Nick Clegg’s televised debate performances into electoral success.
The Conservatives’ strong performance proves the problem is not about being in a coalition government. David Cameron’s party stood on 40% and 39% respectively, while Labour were placed on 33% and 36%.
This leaves the Lib Dems trailing Labour by 17% and 21%.
Voters appear baffled by the party’s identity. Nearly three-quarters said it was difficult to know what the party stood for.
