David Cameron will miss an important visit from Fifa’s World Cup inspection team next week due to his family holiday in Cornwall.
The team will instead be welcomed by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg and sports secretary Jeremy Hunt.
Mr Cameron is understood to have spoken to Fifa president Sepp Blatter yesterday to discuss the visit – a crucial stage in the organisation’s assessment of where to hold the 2018 World Cup.
During the conversation the prime minister is understood to have reiterated his personal support for England’s bid, and that of the coalition government.
He also passed on his apologies for his absence and recorded a personal video message for the Fifa inspection team.
Mr Blatter, a controversial figure who has irritated many football fans with his off-the-cuff statements on player transfers and goal-line technology, will visit Downing Street in Autumn.
