David Cameron has missed the Pope’s speech to MPs in Westminster Hall because of his father’s funeral, which took place today.
Ian Cameron, who enjoyed a successful career as a stockbroker despite a disability caused by stunted legs, died in a French hospital last week aged 77 after suffering a stroke and severe heart complications.
His son, aided by French president Nicolas Sarkozy, rushed to his bedside for his father’s final hours.
Today the Camerons bid farewell to the man the prime minister described in a statement last week as an “amazing man” at a private service in Berkshire.
“He touched a lot of lives in lots of different ways and was a brilliant husband and father,” Mr Cameron said last week.
“You could never be down for long when he was around. We will miss him terribly but have a bank of memories that can never be exhausted.”
The prime minister’s father’s death came just one month after the birth of Florence Rose Endellion, his fourth child, while the family were on holiday in Cornwall.
