Three peers ‘should be suspended’ over expenses

Three peers should be suspended over their expenses, a Lords committee has said.
The House of Lords Privileges and Conduct Committee said Lady Uddin and Lord Bhatia did not act in good faith when they incorrectly designated their main homes so they could claim overnight allowance.
Baroness Uddin should be suspended until early 2012 and forced to repay £125,349, the committee concluded.
Lord Bhatia should be suspended for eight months while Labour’s Lord Paul, who has already paid back £41,982, should be suspended for four months.
The committee did not find that lord Paul acted in bad faith but said his actions were “utterly unreasonable and demonstrated gross irresponsibility and negligence”.
Peers will debate the findings on Thursday.
