Barack Obama ‘to join Lib Dems’
By politics.co.uk staff
The president of the United States of America is set to become the Liberal Democrats’ newest member, politics.co.uk can reveal.
White House strategists are hoping to boost Barack Obama’s low approval ratings stateside by associating himself with Nick Clegg.
“It’s a match made in heaven,” one senior staffer told politics.co.uk.
“He’s obviously a Democrat, but he’s also quite Liberal as well. Best of all, he’s incredibly unpopular – a perfect fit with the junior coalition party in the UK.”
Lib Dem strategists are already considering inviting Mr Obama to chair one of the party’s federal policy committees, possibly on health issues, where his advice about pushing through unpopular reforms will no doubt be of invaluable use to the Lib Dems.
“Best of all,” the White House staffer added, “Mr Clegg seems perfectly in tune with our ideals. Whenever the Conservatives ask him to back a Tory policy, he replies the same way every time: ‘yes we can’.”
UPDATE – Now it’s after 12pm on April Fool’s Day, sources have pointed out that this story is completely ridiculous; it’s clear, they say, that Mr Obama – cursed with low approval ratings as he is – wouldn’t possibly consider joining a party polling in the low teens…
