Wrexham council looks set to reject plans that would have banned certain political events from the area.

The borough council debated banning certain marches in a bid to prevent the far-right English and Welsh Defence Leagues marching through the streets.

Proposals suggested that the area of Queen’s Square and Llwn Isaf could be legally excluded from political events which were “offensive to public morals” – a term criticised as being dangerously broad by opponents.

Reports suggest that any such move would be illegal, however.

Plaid Cymru councillor Marc Jones, who opposed the proposals, told the Daily Post: “I’m glad officers have accepted a common sense approach on this.

“Banning such basic democratic rights was completely out of order and I’m glad the new protocol accepts that.”
