Police ‘writing off’ rape allegations
Rape is written off as a 'no crime' incident more than any other kind of violent crime, new figures suggest.
Home Office statistics show police write off 11% of allegations, compared to two per cent of burglaries, drug complaints or robberies.
Only fraud and forgery have a higher 'no crime' level, at 13%.
The finding will add to the sense that something is fundamentally wrong with Britain's conception of what constitutes rape, coming after George Galloway's controversial statements on the Julian Assange case.
The level of 'no crime' assessment deviated sharply across local areas. One in five rape cases were dropped in Surrey, while only one in 20 was not investigated in Essex.
