Sir Keir Starmer has stressed earlier today that there is “no case” for the UK re-joining the European Union.
During a call-in show with BBC Radio Newcastle, the Labour leader explained: “We have exited the EU and we’re not going back, and let me be very clear in the North East on that. There is no case for rejoining.”
“What I want to see now is not just Brexit done in the sense that we’re technically out the EU, I want to make it work. I want to make sure we take advantage of the opportunities and that we have a clear plan for Brexit.”
Sir Keir was appointed shadow Brexit Secretary by Jeremy Corbyn in 2016.
He backed ‘Remain’ in the 2016 referendum and endorsed a ‘second referendum’ policy at the 2018 Labour Party conference in Liverpool.
This position then became Labour Party policy for the 2019 General Election.
Of the 54 seats gained by the Conservatives from Labour in 2019, 52 were areas that voted leave in 2016.
The leader of the opposition explained that he was visiting the north of England to “listen” to voters.
Sir Keir went on to urge the government to overhaul social care and to state that British politicians were united against Putin in the ongoing Ukraine crisis.
He also discussed having received death threats following his mobbing by protestors in Westminster last week who accused him of being a “paedophile protector”.
