IAS response to supreme court judgement on MUP
Commenting on the Supreme Court judgement handed down today related to Scotland’s plans to introduce minimum unit pricing for alcohol, Katherine Brown, Chief Executive of the Institute of Alcohol Studies said:
“Today’s Supreme Court judgement marks a momentous milestone for public health. Scotland can now press ahead with a lifesaving policy that will make a huge difference to thousands of families. Importantly, Big Business has failed to block government action to protect the vulnerable.
“This will make Scotland an international leader in tackling alcohol harm, a problem that for too long has blighted the nation. Today’s announcement provides a green light for many other countries, including Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, to follow suit. It is vital that Westminster reviews its position on minimum pricing so that England is not left behind faced with poorer health outcomes than our neighbours.”
