BAKERS UNION CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION FROM THE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT TO STOP DAWNFRESH JOB LOSSES
The Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) have called on the Scottish Government to help save 230 permanent and 90 temporary jobs that are under threat due to the proposed closure of the Dawnfresh seafood plant in Uddingston.
Workers were left stunned yesterday by the shock announcement of the closure of the site with production being transferred to the company’s plant in Arbroath.
Dawnfresh is a Scottish owned business and one of the largest producers of seafood in the UK.
Speaking following the announcement BFAWU Scottish Organiser Mark McHugh said:
“The BFAWU stands ready to work with Dawnfresh, the local authorities, Scottish Government and others to put a plan in place to save these jobs.
“The workers at Dawnfresh have worked throughout the Covid 19 pandemic to keep families fed and supermarket shelves stocked, they deserve so much better than to be treated in this way.
“We are totally committed to looking at all ways to ensure these jobs can be retained.
“We are seeking an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and the local authority so we can put in a concerted and joint effort to save this plant.”
