Government hydrogen plan must move beyond ambition to serious plan for delivery
We cannot repeat the existing renewables scandal where taxpayer billions fund exporting essential jobs overseas
GMB, the energy union, has responded to the Government’s announcement of £240 million to support the production of hydrogen.
Gary Smith, GMB General Secretary, said:
“GMB called for the hydrogen production target to be doubled – but the Government must now move beyond ambitions and offer a serious plan for delivery.
“Most of the Government’s hydrogen funding had already been announced and workers in the gas sector and energy-intensive industries need Ministers to go further and provide certainty over their futures.
“We cannot repeat the scandal of the existing renewables funding mechanism: a green poll-tax that has seen billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money fund projects that repeatedly export essential UK jobs overseas.”
