Church concerned by marriage becoming ‘a middle class secret’
During questions to the church commissioner, Philip Hollobone asked commissioner Andrew Selous whether the Church of England were concerned by reports that high costs are making marriage “a middle class secret”.
Selous confirmed that the Church is “absolutely concerned about this extremely important social justice issue”.
The commissioner told the House that “we should learn” from churches which provide dresses, and from ceremonies in which the congregation provide food and flowers. He said that kind actions like these ensure that the “joys of marriage are shared across every income group”.
