Labour’s Kim Johnson, asked the deputy minister for digital, culture, media and sport, Nigel Huddleston about the steps being taken to ensure diverse representation in cricket.
It was agreed by all that “actions speak louder than words” and that “there is more to do in cricket” to tackle the “institutional racism”. However, Huddleston admitted that the national team selection was “not an area the government has control over” and that it is “for governing bodies to decide”.
The chair of the select committee, Julian Knight pointed to the struggles that Yorkshire cricket club’s new chair, Lord Patel with “groups of individuals seeking to delay and derail vital reforms of the club in order to tackle the scourge of racism”.
