Government ‘rises to the moment’ but MPs feel Russian sanctions ‘must go further’
Paymaster General Michael Ellis put forward the motion for new sanctions on Russia that had been announced by Liz Truss, telling the House that the government had “risen to the moment”. While these sanctions were supported, MPs in the Labour and the Conservative party both felt that sanctions “must go further”.
Shadow foreign sffairs minister Stephen Doughty welcomed the sanctions but emphasised the importance of the UK not being the “weak link” in the international “coalition” to stop Putin due to the government’s “slow pace”.
Conservative MP David Davis al;so showed support but told the Paymaster General that the UK “must go further” and ensure that Russia’s allies including China, India and Brazil due not “fascinate” Russia.
