Knight and Dorries row over proposed new joint committee on digital regulation

Julian Knight, chair of the digital culture media and sport committee, has warned Nadine Dorries against creating a new joint committee on digital regulation.

The culture secretary ruled out establishing a joint committee “for wider legislation”, but admitted that a committee “to undertake post-legislative scrutiny of the online safety bill… is under consideration.”

Dorries added: “There cannot be too much ongoing scrutiny of this bill.”

Knight stated a new committee would “cut across the work of the existing parliamentary committees that are already well placed to scrutinise digital regulation.”
