McMahon pushes Eustice on provisions for food security
During environment questions, secretary of state Jim McMahon asked minister of state George Eustice what the plan was to “address weakening food security” given Ukraine and Russia’s large exports of wheat and fertiliser.
Eustice assured the House that the UK are “largely self-sufficient” with some imports coming from Canada. The minister explained that the price of food is likely to rise more so because of the rising costs in transport rather than the cost of ingredients.
McMahon then called on the government to help food banks, a service which is “rocketing” in demand while “donations are down”. Eustice told the House that energy and housing costs are “big drivers of financial insecurity”, and that schemes have already been implemented in these areas.
