MPs send message that physics is something that girls want to do
In the final moments of this session of parliament, Chi Onwurah and Carol Managhan used points of order to go against comments made by the chair of the government’s social mobility commission, that “physics isn’t something that girls tend to fancy” and that it is “a natural thing”.
Onwurah told the House that it contradicts her lived experience and that these comments go against the government’s own policy of encouraging girls into STEM.
Sir Lindsey Hoyle told the House that while they were not points of order, “it was a point well made”.
