Anne McLaughlin was elected as the Scottish National Party MP for Glasgow North East in 2015. Having lost the seat to the Labour Party in 2017, she was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 2,548.
The constituency of Glasgow North East contains the communities of Springburn and Possilpark in the north of the City. Although many of the area’s tower blocks, which once formed some of the tallest public housing in Europe, have been demolished, this is one of the most deprived constituencies in the UK. This area was formerly represented at Westminster between 1979 and 2009 by Michael Martin who served as Speaker of the House of Commons between 2000 and 2009. Although the SNP gained this seat from Labour in 2015, Labour won the seat back in 2017 by just 242 votes, before the SNP won it back in 2019.
McLaughlin has served as the SNP spokesperson on Justice and Immigration since February 2021.
McLaughlin served briefly in the Scottish Parliament between 2009 and 2011.
Born in 1966, Anne McLaughlin grew up in Greenock and was educated at Glasgow University. She spent three months volunteering in post-tsunami Sri Lanka in 2008.
Before becoming an MP, she worked in the charity sector as a fund raiser including for the African Caribbean Network. She was once a political advisor to Bob Doris MSP.

She is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Deaths Abroad, Consular Services, and Assistance; Governance and Inclusive Leadership; the Caribbean; the Faroe Islands; and Missing Children and Adults.
