Simon Baynes is the Conservative MP for Clwyd South, having first been elected to Parliament in 2019, gaining the seat from Labour, with a majority of 1,239 over the Labour Party.
The Clwyd South constituency is found within North Wales and covers Llangollen, Ruabon, Rhosllanerchrugog and the surrounding area. The seat is largely rural and runs along the English border. Containing the suburbs of Wrexham, this was one of a number of north Wales seats that fell to the Conservatives for the first time in 2019.
Born in 1960, Simon Baynes was educated at Shrewsbury School and then Cambridge University. He worked in finance for J.P Morgan Cazenove from 1982 to 2006, before running a small bookshop.
He formerly served as the Mayor of the Montgomeryshire town of Llanfyllin, and was a Conservative Councillor on Powys Council. He was a supporter of Brexit in the 2016 EU Referendum.
A supporter of the Arts, Baynes is the Chairman of the All Party Group on Performing Arts Education, and Vice Chair of the All Party Group on Theatre. He is also the Vice Chair of the separate All Party Parliamentary Groups on Dementia, Tourism, Mutuals, and Outdoor Learning.
