Chris Stephens was first elected as the SNP MP for Glasgow South West in 2015 being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 4,900.
Glasgow South West contains the districts of Cardonald, Darnley, Penilee, and Pollok. It is one of the most deprived seats in Scotland with high levels of poor health and unemployment. Ibrox, the home of Rangers Football Club is found within this seat. A former Labour strong hold, it was gained by the SNP in 2015. The Party have held the seat ever since, albeit by just 60 votes in 2017.
Born in 1973, Chris Stephens was born in Glasgow and was educated at Trinity High School in Renfrew. He was a councillor on Glasgow City Council before being elected to Parliament. A former leading activist with the trade union, Unison, Stephens is secretary of the SNP Trade Union Group.
Chris Stephens joined the Scottish National Party when he was 16, and has been a member of the party’s National Executive Committee
