Fabian Hamilton was elected Labour MP for Leeds North East in 1997, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 17,089.
The Leeds North East constituency covers the north of Leeds. The seat spreads out from the ethnically diverse inner city area of Chapeltown, to the northern affluent suburbs of Moortown and Roundhay, and out into a strip of countryside around the Eccup reservoir.
This was once safe Conservative territory, held by the party between 1950 and 1997, and once represented by the Thatcherite guru Sir Keith Joseph. However the demographics in this area have changed dramatically in the Twenty First century and this seat has continued to buck the national trend and continued to swing further to Labour, including even in 2019. This seat contains a notable Jewish population. Unlike much of the rest of Yorkshire, a high 63% of the electorate backed Remain in the 2016 EU referendum.
Fabian Hamilton is currently the Shadow Minister for Peace and Disarmament.
Born in 1955, Hamilton went to school with the comedian and actor Griff Ryhs Jones. He was educated at York University. He worked as a graphic designer and then as a computer consultant for Apple Macintosh before being elected to Parliament.
Before his election to Parliament, Fabian served on Leeds City Council between 1989 and 1997 and chaired the Councils Education Committee.
Hamilton supported Emily Thornberry in the 2020 Labour leadership election. He backed Jeremy Corbyn in the 2016 contest, and Yvette Cooper in the 2015 leadership election.
He is married with three children, and is a keen cyclist. He employs his wife as a part time caseworker.
Fabian Hamilton is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Equitable Life Policyholders. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Motorcycling; the Night Time Economy; Thalassaemia; the Faroe Islands; Iceland; Liechtenstein; Morocco; the Pitcairn Islands;
