Newlands, Gavin

Gavin Newlands was first elected as the SNP MP for Paisley & Renfrewshire North in 2015, having been reelected in 2019 with a majority of 11,902.

The constituency of Paisley and Renfrewshire North to the west of Scotland’s central belt includes the towns of Renfrew, Linwood and the north of Paisley itself. Found on the south banks of the River Clyde, this was traditionally a safe Labour seat, but it has been held relatively comfortably by the SNP since their 2015 election landslide.  Glasgow Airport is found in this constituency.  It contains a mix of more well to do suburbs on the edge of Glasgow along with some more deprived former industrial areas.

Born in 1980, Gavin Newlands attended St James’ Primary School and Trinity High School in the town of Renfrew. He worked in restaurant management before being elected to Parliament.

He was elected as a councillor on Renfrewshire Council between 2011 and 2015.  He joined the SNP when he was aged just 12, stating that he became politically active in light of the campaign against the poll tax.

Newlands was previously the Captain of Paisley Rugby Club, having played for the club for 17 years.

Gavin Newlands is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Scottish Sport; and Green Deal Mis-selling.  He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Snooker; State Pension Inequality for Women; Tennis; American Football; Electric Vehicles; E-sports; Golf; and Infant Feeding and Inequalities.
