Alister Jack is the Conservative MP for Dumfries and Galloway, having first been elected to Parliament in 2017, and then being reelected with a majority of 1,805 over the Scottish National Party.
Dumfries and Galloway is found within the South Wester corner of Scotland in the county of Dumfriesshire. This seat covers Dumfries, Stranraer and a vast rural area. It is one of the largest seats by area in the United Kingdom. Held by Labour after its new boundaries were created in 2010, this seat was gained by the SNP in 2017, before being won by the Conservatives in both 2017 and 2019. In a telling indication of events in Scottish politics, the Labour vote here declined from over 45% in 2010 to less than 10% in 2019.
Alister Jack was appointed as Secretary of State for Scotland in July 2019. He previously served as an assistant whip, whip, and Vice Chair of the Scottish Conservative Party.
Born in 1963, Jack was educated at Herriot Watt University. Before being elected to Parliament, Jack was a successful entrepreneur. He founded his own tent-hire firm, Field and Lawn, alongside two self-storage companies, which were sold in 2017 for over £50 million.
Jack’s own personal fortune has been estimated at around £20 million.
Jack currently owns a large dairy farm in Lockerbie, and he is a shareholder in a business that grows Christmas Trees.
He is married with three adult children.
