Freer, Mike

Mike Freer was first elected as the Conservative MP for Finchley and Golders Green in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 6,562.

The Finchley and Golders Green constituency is found in North London and covers the areas of Finchley, Golders Green and Cricklewood.  Known for expensive house prices, this seat is well served by the London underground network and contains a high number of commuters into central London.  This is an ethnically diverse area in which over a fifth of voters are said to be Jewish, the highest of any seat in the UK, and where a tenth are said to be Muslim.

This seat was represented by the Labour Party during its landslide years between 1997 and 2010. However it is most well known for being represented in Parliament for many years by the former Conservative Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.   In recent years all three major parties have polled well in this area, and a high 69% of the electorate backed Remain in the 2016 EU Referendum.

Freer was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for International Trade in September 2021.  He served as a government whip between 2019 and 2021, having been an assistant whip between 2017 and 2019.

Born in 1960, Mike Freer was a self employed consultant working in the banking and finance sectors, before becoming an MP.  He formerly worked for Barclays bank.

Freer was a member of Barnet Council between 2002 and 2010, and was the Leader of Barnet Council between 2006 and 2009.

Freer is one of Parliament’s 55 openly gay MPs and is married.  He supported Jeremy Hunt in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.
