Taiwo Owatemi is the Labour MP for Coventry North West , having first been elected to Parliament in 2019 with a slim majority of just 208 votes.
Coventry North West is an ethnically diverse seat which contains notable Muslim and Sikh communities. Prior to the 2019 General Election, it has been represented at Westminster for over four decades by the Labour businessman, Geoffrey Robinson. In 2019, Labour’s vote dropped by over 10% here and the party only just retained the seat.
Owatemi was appointed as Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities in September 2021. She was previously the PPS at Westminster to the Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Thomas-Symonds.
Born in 1992, Taiwo Owatemi was educated at Kent University, and worked as an oncology pharmacist specialising in cancer and palliative care before being elected to Parliament. She is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Pharmacy.
According to the register of Members Interests she is a shareholder and unpaid director of the clothing company, Afrika Connekt Ltd. She is the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Investment Management.
She supported Lisa Nandy in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
Owatemi is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Nigeria, Knife Crime, Thalassaemia, and the West Midlands.
