Robert Halfon was first elected as the Conservative MP for Harlow in 2010, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 14,063.
The constituency of Harlow is a compact seat on the western side of Essex and contains the New Town of Harlow and the town of Roydon. The town of Harlow continues to grow and contains a high number of London commuters. A tightly fought marginal constituency, Harlow has been won by the government of the day in every General Election since 1983.
Robert Halfon served in the government has Minister of State for Skills between 2016 and 2017. He was the Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party between 2015 and 2016.
Halfon is currently the Chair of the Commons Education Select Committee.
Halfon supported Remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum. He backed Sajid Javid in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.
An independent MP who is not afraid to speak his mind he has previously campaigned against hospital parking charges, called for St Georges Day to be a bank holiday, and pressed for a reduction in fuel duties. He has previously called for more Conservatives to join trade unions.
Born in 1969 in North London, Halfon was educated at Exeter University. Halfon has worked in politics all his life, having previously been a political consultant, chief of staff to Oliver Letwin, and an advisor to the Centre for Social Justice.
Robert Halfon is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Fair Fuel for UK Motorists and UK Hauliers; Tamils; Brazil; Poland; Romania; Serbia; Taiwan.
