Mary Robinson is the Conservative MP for Cheadle, having first been elected to Parliament in 2015. She was re-elected in the 2019 General Election with a majority of 2,336 over the Liberal Democrats.
Cheadle is one of just a few Conservative seats in Greater Manchester, found to the south of the conurbation bordering Cheshire. It covers Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall. An affluent seat, containing a large number of Manchester commuters, Cheadle has some of the highest home ownership levels seen anywhere in the UK. This constituency has been a long standing Conservative – Liberal Democrat marginal. With the Lib Dems having held the seat between 2001 and 2015, it has been won narrowly by the Conservatives in recent years.
Born in 1955, Mary Robinson was educated at Preston Polytechnic and Lancashire Polytechnic. She worked as a chartered accountant, running an accountancy practice in Preston with her husband Stephen.
The Register of Members Interests shows her to be a shareholder in a clothing design company, Mary Felicity Design Ltd.
Robinson was a Councillor on Ribble Council in Lancashire between 2007 and 2013.
She supported Remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum, and backed Sajid Javid in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.
Robinson is married with four adult children.
Mary Robinson is Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Whistleblowing. She is Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Australia and New Zealand; the Commonwealth; Israel; Challenger Banks and Building Societies;
