Brine, Steve

Steve Brine was first elected as the Conservative MP for Winchester in 2010, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of just 995 over the Liberal Democrats.

The constituency of Winchester is located in the centre of the county of Hampshire along the M3 motorway. It contains the city of Winchester, the ancient capital of Wessex,  as well as the smaller communities of Chandler’s Ford, Hiltingbury, and New Alresford.  The University of Winchester is found in this seat, and the computer IBM have a large presence on the Hursley business park.  This constituency has long been a tight Liberal Democrat and Conservative marginal, which the Liberal Democrats succeeded in initially winning by just 2 votes in 1997, and which they held through a subsequent by election all the way through to 2010.

Brine served as Under Secretary of State for Public Health and Primary Care between 2017 and 2019.

In 2019 he was one of a number of Conservative MPs who lost the Conservative whip when they voted against the government in an attempt to make a no-deal Brexit illegal.  He had the party whip restored just before the General Election.

A former PPS to Jeremy Hunt, he supported him in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.

Born in 1974, Brine was educated at Bohunt Comprehensive School, Highbury College in Portsmouth and the Liverpool Hope University where he read History and served a sabbatical year as President of the Students’ Union.

He then worked as a radio journalist for BBC local radio, and then in business for a public relations consultancy.

According to the Register of Members Interests, he works as a strategic Adviser to Remedium Partners (a healthcare recruitment company), and to Microlink PC (UK).

Brine is a Christian who in 2013 voted against Same Sex Marriage.

Brine is married with two children.  He enjoys golf and plays off a handicap of 17.  He also likes football and is a Spurs fan.
